Clarithromycin is a medication in a class of drugs known as macrolide antibiotics. According to PubMed Health, clarithromycin is used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria, such as pneumonia, bronchitis, and infections of the ear, sinuses, skin and throat. Patients prescribed clarithromycin must take this medication throughout the whole course of days for which it is prescribed. Stopping treatment early can cause a relapse or worsening of infection. Some common side effects are associated with clarithromycin.

Stomach Discomfort

Patients taking clarithromycin may experience stomach discomfort during treatment. Symptoms can include mild stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and upset stomach, reports Drugs.com. Taking clarithromycin with food may help to lessen these effects. Patients who experience stomach discomfort may want to adhere to a bland diet and eat small meals more frequently throughout the day to alleviate symptoms. Vomiting and diarrhea that becomes severe should be brought to the attention of a physician. Left untreated, it can lead to dehydration and additional complications.

Unpleasant Taste

Clarithromycin may cause an unpleasant or unusual taste in the mouth. The use of mouthwash, mints, gum, or hard candies can help to lessen this effect. This side effect should diminish once treatment with clarithromycin is complete.

Headache and Dizziness

Some patients may develop headache and dizziness while taking clarithromycin. These side effects may be temporary and diminish over time as the body adjusts to clarithromycin. Patients should use caution while driving or completing tasks that require them to be awake and alert. If headache becomes bothersome, a physician should be consulted regarding the use of an over-the-counter medication such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Headache that worsens or persists, or is accompanied by fever, sore throat or skin rash may be a sign of a serious reaction to clarithromycin and a doctor should be notified right away, explains Drugs.com.

Vaginal Itching and Discharge

Women taking clarithromycin may develop vaginal itching and an increase in vaginal discharge. These may be symptoms of a vaginal yeast infection. While an antibiotic works to kill bad bacteria in the body, it also kills some of the good bacteria in the intestinal tract and elsewhere. This may create an environment in the body that's more susceptible to an overgrowth of yeast. Additional symptoms of a vaginal yeast infection can include pain during intercourse, white-colored discharge, redness, itching and irritation. Taking a daily probiotic supplement or eating foods high in natural probiotics such as yogurt may help to prevent a vaginal yeast infection.
