The town of Riverview, in central Florida's Hillsborough County, is a bedroom community for its larger neighbor, Tampa. As the name suggests, the town is located on the banks of the Alafia River, which flows into Tampa Bay. Although Florida is a very motorist-heavy state, bikers in and around the town will still find the mild climate and area bike shops accommodating to their cycling needs.
Biking in the Area
Biking on Riverview's roads is possible, although many cyclists may prefer to ride down by the river's edge for a picturesque view and any breeze during the hot summer months. Alderman's Ford Nature Preserve is another option, with a five-mile trail that allows for bird and wildlife watching as well.

Florida can get hot in the summer, so bikers should always bring plenty of water. Summer storms can also be intense, so bikers should check the weather before setting out and avoid riding in the road when there is little visibility. Those visiting the Riverview area for cycling should try to visit in the cooler, winter months. January is the coolest month, with an average high of 70 degrees Fahrenheit. The driest month is April, although temperatures are still near 80 degrees on average. The months of June through September are generally hot, with an average high of 89 or above and five or more inches of rain.
Biking in Tampa
After biking Riverview, cyclists may also want to go farther afield and visit nearby Tampa, just over 13 miles away, for more biking opportunities. The city's Upper Tampa Bay Trail and Suncoast Trails are two nonmotorized pathways for bikers. The city's Lettuce Lake Park also has a bike path.
Those who want to ride in a group can join up with the Seminole Heights Bicycle Club in Tampa, which has no fees or membership requirements. The club offers three different rides, from slower, family-appropriate paces to more challenging ones.
Florida Biking Laws
In Florida, bicycles are considered vehicles, so cyclists must always obey the rules of the road, such as stopping for red lights and stop signs. Riders are not allowed to have more than one person on their bike, unless it is designed as a tandem, so Riverview cyclists should not try to share. Those riding at night must have a light on their bikes.
