Although it is possible to lose more than 2 pounds in a short period of time, the results are usually temporary and weight is regained just as quickly. When quick weight loss occurs, there is little or no fat loss. Muscle tone is usually lost along with carbohydrates and water, according to the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America. You can work on safely losing at least 1 to 2 pounds in a matter of days through diet, exercise and lifestyle changes.

Step 1

Stop overeating or eating unhealthful foods. Throw away any foods that can be classified as junk food, as well as any high-calorie, high-sugar, salty or fatty foods. According to Dr. Phil McGraw, author of "The Ultimate Weight Solution," you can't eat what's not there. Many people overeat because food is available and accessible---not always because of hunger. You cannot lose weight if you consume more calories than you burn.

Step 2

Create a 3,500-calorie deficit to lose 1 pound per week. Use diet, exercise or both to burn more calories than you consume. For example, cut 500 calories from your diet and burn an extra 500 calories through exercise to lose 2 pounds per week. Creating a larger deficit will cause more weight loss; however, losing weight too fast may be harder to maintain for long-term success.

Step 3

Be physically active for at least an hour every day. According to the American College of Sports Medicine, 60 to 90 minutes of physical activity, three to five days per week may be necessary to achieve weight loss. Choose activities you enjoy, such as skiing, roller skating, swimming or bike riding, to make it easier to perform for longer periods of time. For example, two hours of roller skating can burn more than 700 calories and help you lose over 1 pound per week depending on your weight, as estimated by Health Status Internet Assessments. Being active for short periods of time, several times a day, is just as effective as one long session---20 minutes three times a day or 10 minutes six times a day.
