The prospect of loading up your vehicle in preparation for a road trip is exciting--until you realize how many things you need to pack to keep your baby safe and happy during the trip. Do not let the sheer volume of your baby's needs stop you. Instead, take the time before you leave to gather all the supplies you need to have a successful car trip.

Step 1

Make a list at least a week before you leave. Go through your baby's daily routine and write down all the equipment and items he uses each day. Include diapers, wipes, bath soap, washcloth, changes of clothes, medications, favorite sleeping toys, bottles and baby food. Designate an area of your house to collect the things you are taking.

Step 2

Call ahead to your destination to determine what amenities are available. If you are staying in a hotel, ask about cribs, high chairs and laundry facilities. Determine if you have access to a refrigerator and microwave. TIf you are staying with a friend or relative, ask if she has or can borrow the items you need.

Step 3

Pack your bags using the list you prepared. Check off each item as you put it in the suitcase. Put your baby's clothes, diaper supply and sleeping accessories in one bag and his food, formula and bottles in another. Remember to take his diaper bag for sightseeing and shopping trips. Roll up the clothes to make more room in the suitcases and put anything that may spill in a plastic bag. Pack a tote bag for yourself that contains first-aid supplies, snacks and hand wipes.

Step 4

Take toys and activities to entertain your baby when she is awake on your car trip. In addition to her favorites, bring items she has never seen before. Borrow some toys from a friend or buy a few inexpensive toys. Bring a small container of nontoxic bubbles and entertain your baby by blowing bubbles. Enthusiastically sing silly songs like "Old MacDonald" and "Wheels on the Bus" to keep her occupied.

Step 5

Plan your route and leaving time to accommodate the baby. Leave at a time that is best for your baby. If your baby falls asleep in the car the minute the car starts, leave at nap time. If not, let him take a nap at home and then leave. Try not to stop when the baby is asleep.

Include plenty of stops along your route. Stop and get out every couple of hours at rest areas or state parks close to your route. After you have changed your baby's diaper, walk around for a few minutes.

Tips and Warnings

  • Properly secure your baby's car seat in the car. Pack your baby's items separately so you can easily access her bag in the car. Remember to bring clothing appropriate for your destination. If you like to drive at night, put your child in his pajamas and leave at bedtime. Bring both soothing and lively music. Put your baby's favorite blanket in his car seat for comfort.
  • Never take your baby out of the car seat when the car is moving. Do not leave your sleeping baby in the car.
