Affecting men, women, and children alike, dark circles under the eyes are usually a harmless sign of lack of sleep or dehydration. Dark circles are more common in those with thinner tissue around the eye as thin skin makes the capillaries under the eyes more apparent, giving a darker look to the under-eye area. For some people, dark eye circles are hereditary while others bring it upon themselves by drinking too much or spending excessive time in the sun causing their bodies to produce too much melanin, a pigment that lends more color to your skin. No matter what the cause, there are several ways to eliminate dark circles.

Step 1

Steep two tea bags in hot water for three to five minutes. Bags of green, black and white tea are the best for removing dark circles.

Step 2

Remove the tea bags from the water and gently squeeze them with your fingers to expel excess moisture.

Step 3

Set the tea bags aside to cool off completely or place them in the refrigerator to give them a slight chill.

Step 4

Lie down and place the tea bags over your eyes, making sure to make contact with the darkened area.

Step 5

Allow the tea bags to remain over your eyes for at least 15 minutes before discarding them.

Tips and Warnings

  • Getting plenty of sleep, staying hydrated, and limiting your exposure to the sun can all help to prevent future dark eye circles.
  • Some medications can cause dark under eye circles; talk to your doctor about whether any medications you are on may be the cause. Do not make changes to your prescription or stop taking them until you have spoken to your doctor who may be able to prescribe something else.
