It doesn't matter whether you're looking to drop fat, add muscle or just maintain a healthy weight--protein is an essential nutrient that may assist you in your goals. While consuming excess calories from protein can result in fat gain just like with carbohydrates and fat, research has shown protein has several dietary advantages. According to a study from the May 2004 issue of the "Journal of the American College of Nutrition," protein increases satiety and has a higher thermogenic, or calorie-burning, effect than other nutrients. Unfortunately, many protein drinks contain added fillers and other ingredients that won't benefit your health. For this reason, be careful to carefully assess protein drinks to see which one is best for you. Consult a doctor before using any supplements.
AllMax Nutrition Isoflex
According to a review by Bodybuilding.com writer Matt Canning, AllMax Nutrition Isoflex is "a great protein powder if you like the addition of other nutritional supplements combined in one convenient shake." Isoflex offers a bit more protein per serving than most powders, with 27 grams. This is because Isoflex contains just 1 gram of carbohydrates and 0.5 grams of fat. Canning noted that Isoflex is sugar-free and explains that Isoflex mixes well and does not trigger any digestive problems. Canning also praised the inclusion of the NOS complex--which supposedly dilates blood vessels to enhance nutrient absorption--and noted that some users might appreciate the additional amounts of the amino acid glutamine.
XPI Myotein
According to the supplement review website ProteinPowder.net, XPI Myotein is the best protein powder available because it excels in several key areas. The website praises Myotein for its high protein content, which comes out to 26 grams per serving, 1 gram less than Isoflex. Like Isoflex, Myotein contains glutamine and other extra ingredients. One possibly beneficial ingredient is forskolin. According to health information website Drugs.com, forskolin may help dilate your blood vessels, which can improve blood flow and possibly lead to better nutrient delivery, as the NOS complex in Isoflex claims to do.
Cytosport EvoPro
Cytosport is the manufacturer of the popular Muscle Milk supplement, and the EvoPro product is similar to Muscle Milk except that it does not contain the high levels of fat in Muscle Milk and is thus lower in calories. Each serving of EvoPro has 26 grams of protein, 3 grams of carbohydrates and 2 grams of fat. EvoPro is different from many other protein powders in that it is a blend of different sources. Instead of containing just whey protein like many brands, EvoPro contains milk protein isolate and micellar casein. These protein sources take longer to digest than whey and can theoretically help your muscle-building efforts by delivering a steady supply of protein over a number of hours.
