Your hands are always exposed, which makes them one of the first areas where skin damage symptoms appear. This includes wrinkles, fine lines and spots of hyperpigmentation. Signs of aging can start appearing as early as in your 20s, warns the American Academy of Dermatology. But you don't have to live with wrinkled hands. Several over-the-counter skincare treatments can help reduce the appearance of hand wrinkles for a younger, more youthful look.

Step 1

Protect your hands from the sun. The sun breaks down your skin cells and is a leading cause of wrinkling, warns the American Academy of Dermatology. If you go out into the sun, wearing protective clothing like gloves or apply a sunscreen product.

Step 2

Smooth on a hand moisturizer during the day, recommends anti-aging skincare expert Paula Begoun. A moisturizing cream or lotion helps diminish the size of wrinkles by plumping up your skin cells with moisture, and it also re-establishes your hand skin's natural protective moisture barrier.

Step 3

Apply a retinol-enhanced skin cream or serum to your hands in the evening, according to the beauty editors of "In Style" magazine. The magazine reports that this form of vitamin A helps rejuvenate your hand skin to reduce both wrinkles and age spots. For additional wrinkle reduction, the University of Maryland Medical Center suggests using a retinol cream that also contains antioxidants like vitamin C.

Step 4

Rub in an alpha hydroxy acid-enhanced hand cream as an alternative to retinol. Though not as effective as retinol, Begoun says AHA hand creams can help reduce wrinkles by getting rid of damaged skin cells and increasing collagen in your skin. For the best results, Begoun says your hand cream's AHA concentration should be a minimum of 5 percent.

Tips and Warnings

  • When choosing a sunscreen product for your hands, the American Academy of Dermatology advises using a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more.
  • Retinol may make your skin more sensitive to the sun, which is why you should apply it in the evening.
