LED, light-emitting diode, Christmas lights come in a wide variety of colors and designs so you can create an indoor or outdoor lighting scene. Flexible LED lighting can be shaped into words or creative motifs. They have many cost saving and environmental benefits. LED lights are a form of solid-state lighting, SSL; they work by passing current through semiconductor material. This causes the material to be illuminated.

Types

LED Christmas lights come in either a single color or multicolor strands. LED lights come in rope lighting, cluster lighting of three to five bulbs, flexible string lighting that can be twisted or manipulated into any shape and LED lights that are attached to artificial Christmas trees or other holiday decorations. LED lights come in standard bulb shapes, both large and small, as well as novelty shapes. They can be frosted, colored or clear. Indoor or outdoor LED lighting is available. There are LED net lights that can over small bushes or shrubs, railing lights and small or large bulb strings for roof edging.

Features

LED lights can be set to twinkle or stay on continuously. They can be plugged into a standard outlet, solar-powered or battery operated. The flexible LED lighting can be shaped and molded into any design. Flex-change lights are a line of Christmas LEDs that allow users to remove and interchange bulbs. This offers the option of changing themes each year without having to buy new light strings.

Benefits

LED Christmas lights are energy efficient decorations. LED lights are more durable, efficient and longer lasting than traditional lighting, says the Environmental Protection Agency. LED lights use 90 percent less electricity, according to the Oct. 2, 2009 edition of the Los Angeles Times. LED lights are cool to the touch, so they will not burn children's curious fingers. They are also encased in hard plastic so they do not break like traditional glass bulbs.

Uses

Indoor or outdoors Christmas scenes can be created using LED lighting. LED rope lighting can be used to light banisters, frame windows or create unique Christmas designs. Rope lighting can also be used to light trees and shrubs. LED lights can be placed in Christmas decorations such as large Santas, reindeer, packages and other lawn ornaments.

Cautions

Do not use traditional incandescent light bulbs with LED light strings. If you use an incandescent bulb on a LED string, you risk a possible overload on the circuit. Always recycle old incandescent light bulbs. Use LED lights as instructed by the manufacturer, and be sure not to create a dangerous situation with too many strings plugged into one socket. Remove accumulated snow from outdoor LED lighting features; the lack of heat from the LED bulbs means the snow will not melt on its own, and the weight could damage the features.
