Half the battle of fitness is waged in the gym, while the other half takes place in the kitchen. Making wise eating choices will either speed up or slow down your fitness goals. Choosing foods that will complement your hard work in the gym will give you more energy, suppress your appetite and build lean muscle.

Lean Meats and Eggs

Lean meats and eggs should be your main source of protein. These foods are high in protein yet low in fat and carbohydrates. Protein is known as the building blocks of muscle but it also keeps you fuller for longer and stabilizes blood sugar. White meat such as chicken and fish will save you from large amounts of saturated fats that are found in red meat. Eggs are high in protein, vitamins and cholesterol. To avoid the fat and cholesterol then remove the yolk and cook only the egg whites.

Fruits and Vegetables

Eating fruits and vegetables provides a feeling of fullness with little to no fat and only a small number of calories, says MayoClinic.com. Fruit will keep you satiated, satisfy your sweet tooth and provide the body with nutrients. Vegetables are fibrous, low in calories and easy to prepare. Including veggies in your meals will add flavor as well. Organic fruit and vegetables is the best way to avoid pesticide and other added chemicals.

Whole Grains

Choosing complex carbohydrates such as whole wheat bread or brown rice will stabilize energy and blood sugar. Avoid refined sugar and bread to avoid an an energy burst and crash. "Cutting back on highly processed carbohydrates and increasing protein improves levels of blood triglycerides and HDL, and so may reduce your chances of having a heart attack, stroke, or other form of cardiovascular disease," says Harvard School of Public Health.

Low Fat Dairy Products

Low fat dairy products will supply you with protein, calcium and vitamins without the additional fat. Choose low fat versions of your favorite foods such as cheese, milk and cottage cheese to save on calories. Also, low fat dairy products can replace the whole versions in recipes. Use low fat frozen yogurt in your smoothie or use skim milk in your cereal.
