Grip tape, applied to the top of your skateboard deck, is meant to give you better traction between the deck and your shoes when performing stunts. Over time, the abrasiveness of the grip tape begins to wear away, leaving you with a less-effective surface that could cause you to slip and fall. When you notice smooth spots, it's time to replace your grip tape by removing the old and applying a new piece. Grip tape can be sticky and messy, but with the right tools it's a short afternoon job.
Step 1
Remove all the hardware from the surface of your deck. The trucks are typically installed after you apply your grip tape, so you'll need the same tools you used to install your trucks. Each type of trucks are different, but you'll likely need a socket wrench or a screwdriver to unscrew the trucks and set them aside. Save all hardware in a safe place.
Step 2
Direct the heat from the blow-dryer to the top of the deck for two to three minutes, according to TNT Ride Extreme Sports. The heat will help loosen the adhesive on the back of the grip tape so it's removed more easily. After two or three minutes, the edges of the grip tape should begin to curl. Test the tape by pulling gently with your fingers. If heated properly, it should come up easily.
Step 3
Insert a paint scraper between the curled grip tape and the deck. Use the scraper to slowly peel back the heated grip tape, and then grasp with your fingers and pull back. You'll need to work in small patches by heating and then pulling so you're able to keep the grip tape hot and the adhesive loose.
Step 4
Pull back all the grip tape as you move down the length of the board. It may be helpful to have a friend help and hold the blow-dryer while you peel. It's fine if the grip tape rips. It likely will come off in small strips or patches. Continue until the surface layer of the grip tape is removed and discarded.
Step 5
Utilize the razor to remove any leftover adhesive, which will likely remain once you've removed the surface of the grip tape. The razor will allow you to scrape away the excess adhesive, leaving the deck mostly clean.
Step 6
Pour a product like Goo-Gone, Simple Green or any other degreasing solution to the deck surface, suggests the Art of Skateboarding. Use the abrasive side of a sponge to wash the degreaser over the skateboard deck and clean away any remnants of grip tape. It's important to clean thoroughly, so when you apply the new tape, you get a smooth and bubble-free surface.
