Playing outdoor games brings people together and provides sportsmanship, mental strategy and physical exercise. Many outdoor games and activities can accommodate all age groups. Spend a family reunion or birthday party outdoors and enjoy classic games that will inspire everyone to participate.
Tag
The classic game of tag is something most children have been raised to learn and love. There are several different variations of tag and most games are easy to follow so all age groups can participate. One popular choice is buzz tag. Fun Attic explains that this game is played by setting up two teams and their surrounding boundary lines. The goal is to cross the boundary while holding your breath and tagging as many opponents as possible without letting out a breath and getting tagged yourself. The goal is for the opposing team to a grab and hold down the buzzer until he runs out of breath.
Clothes pin tag is a exciting game for teens or adults. Five clothes pins are placed on the back of each player's shirt before playing. Everyone lines up around a 40 x 40 foot rope that's placed on the ground. The goal of this game is to collect as many pins as possible off the back of your opponents without losing your own. As you gather clothes pins, you need to get down on one knee and pin each one to yourself on your back. The person with the most clothes pins on their back wins.
Carnival
Making your own outdoor carnival allows kids and adults to interact. Adults can set up by creating tents, flag streamers and balloons. Set up carnival style games such as ring toss, balloon poppers, basketball hoop shot and horseshoe ring. You can also have a balloon animal contest where everyone is judged on making their own animal balloons. A juggling contest, pie eating contest, sack race and a "knockdown empty metal cans" game are additional choices for your carnival. Set the atmosphere with carousel and carnival music. Life 123 suggests renting or creating your own concession stand to serve popcorn, cotton candy, caramel apples and hot dogs guests. Give out prizes for winners.
Obstacle Course
An obstacle course is an invigorating physical outdoor game for all ages. According to TLC, you can create your own backyard obstacle course with items found from around the home. Use a garden hose to create a zigzag pattern in between a series of hula hoops that you need to hop through. Add a Slip and Slide for one area of the obstacle course. Line up a row of chairs for participants to crawl through without knocking them over. Set up a wading pool or large metal bucket to bob for apples. Split the participants into pairs and have someone with a timer or stopwatch keep score. The first one to the finish wins.
