Sour stomach is the result of poor digestion causing acid buildup and reflux into the esophagus. Preventing sour stomach and excess acid can be accomplished through dietary changes and the use of a variety of easily available remedies. Home remedies may not cure the cause of sour stomach but may reduce symptoms, allowing a person time to make dietary and lifestyle changes. Seek medical attention if acid reflux or pain persists after a week's time.
Bromelain
Bromelain is an enzyme found in pineapples, mainly in their skin and leaves. The enzyme is reputed to help relieve acid reflux and aid in the digestion of food, primarily proteins, according to the University of Michigan Health System. Bromelain is available in health food stores in capsule form and can be taken with meals to prevent sour stomach. The recommended dose is 500mg, two or three times a day.
Apples
Eating apples is simple way to relieve acid indigestion and sour stomach, according to the Earth Clinic website. Eating sweet apples or applesauce helps stimulate the release of bicarbonate from the pancreas during the digestive process, establishing an alkaline environment, which relieves acid reflux, according to the book, "The pH Miracle." When slight alkalinity is maintained, stomach upsets are few and digestion proceeds smoothly as it was meant to. A slice or two of apple can be eaten between meals or before bedtime to relieve and prevent indigestion.
Baking Soda
According to "The pH Miracle", 1/2 tsp. baking soda mixed in 8 oz. water will neutralize stomach acids, preventing reflux and sour stomach symptoms. The drink can be repeated throughout the day as needed up to a total of 4 tsp. of baking soda per day. This is not a substitute for dietary changes. People with high blood pressure should consult a health practitioner before using baking soda, which may raise their blood pressure.
Elevating the Head
A home remedy that works well in reducing acidic stomach for some people is to lay with the head and upper body elevated during the night, according to the Mayo Clinic. An acid reflux wedge pillow can be used to raise the upper body, which assists gravity in keeping stomach acids in the stomach and out of the esophagus.
