A double chin is the name given to the extra skin underneath the jawbone. This skin hangs in a manner to create a roll and gives the appearance of a second chin. Sagging skin due to age or excess fat tissue under the jaw are the usual causes of a double chin. There are options to get rid of a sagging chin.

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid is used by plastic surgeons to attempt to firm a double chin caused by aged and sagging skin. Hyaluronic acid is a gel injected into the skin to add volume and hydration. The acid occurs naturally in skin therefore, UCLA Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery claim no allergy testing is required prior to treatment. The gel is used to smooth wrinkles and folds. The treatment takes about 20 to 30 minutes with immediate results..

Mesotherapy

Mesotherapy was originally created as a pain reliever for skin inflammation. In a 2010 IDEA Fitness Journal, Volume 7, Dr. Len Kravitz, program coordinator of exercise science and a researcher at the University of New Mexico, in Albuquerque, described the procedure as using an injectable medication and homeopathic mixture, including vitamins, amino acids, enzymes and minerals. The solution is injected into the double chin area where it is supposed to reduce fat and cellulite. The method is not scientifically proven and according to Dr. Kravitz, the Brazilian National Agency of Health banned the procedure due to negative effects.

Jaw Exercise

Perform exercises to target the platysma muscle which controls the jaws movement. The platysma is located at the front of your neck and extends from the chin down to the breastbone. When jaw and throat muscles tighten a double chin will shrink. As people age, their jaw and throat muscles begin to sag. Jaw exercises, particularly the platysma, tighten the muscles giving a more youthful appearance. For example, hold a tennis ball under your chin and against your neck. Now open and close your mouth. This is a resistance exercise targeting the platysma muscle. Exercise is not an overnight cure. It will take a few weeks of exercising to see results.

Drink Water

Stay well hydrated with water to help reduce a double chin when the excess is caused from fat tissue under the jawline. Drinking water helps to flush retained water from the body. Consider replacing high calorie drinks with plain water which has no calories. This reduces empty calories from the diet and gives the body a chance to burn fat stores. The Institute of Medicine recommends the average woman should consume 2.7 liters or 0.71 gallons of water a day and men should consume 3.7 liters or 0.98 gallons each day.
