Detoxification Diet Programs

Detoxification diets are eating plans that claim to not only help you lose weight, but also rid your body of unwanted toxins. On average, detox diets last anywhere from a few days to several weeks and typically involve a fasting period, according to the Mayo Clinic. If you do decide to do a detox diet, speak to your doctor first because possible side effects include nausea, dizziness and headache.

Fruit Flush Diet

This detox plan promises a quick 10-pound weight loss in only three days and was developed by a nutritionist named Jay Robb. This diet must only be followed for a short period of time because it is very low in calories and in nutrients. The first day on the diet, you fast on solid food and are only permitted protein shakes. For the next two days, you are permitted to eat as much fresh fruit as you want every two hours. For dinner, a serving of lean protein and raw vegetables are permitted.

Master Cleanse

The Master Cleanse was a detox program developed by the late Stanley Burroughs, an alternative health advocate. For approximately seven to 10 days, you eat no solid food. Instead, you sip on a concoction of maple syrup, filtered water, lemon juice and cayenne pepper. You are permitted an unlimited amount of water. A saltwater flush is done daily that involves drinking a mixture of sea salt and warm water to stimulate the bowels.

Liver Cleansing Diet

This diet plan was developed by a licensed Australian doctor, Sandra McRae. For eight weeks, you are not to eat any dairy, refined sugar, alcohol, processed food and fried meals. Instead, eat raw fruit, raw vegetables, nuts, seeds, poultry, grains and fish. Two liters of juice, water or tea must be consumed daily. You are also instructed on the detox plan to take liver-cleansing supplement capsules that contain herbal ingredients to improve liver function.
