If you love golf, then introduce your kids to the sport. You can golf as a family or enjoy time alone on the course with your child. However, you need to ensure that your child has the correct equipment. If you fit kids' golf clubs properly, you avoid creating potential issues with their swing. In addition, kids' clubs are lighter and thinner than adult clubs, making them easier for kids to swing and hold.

Step 1

Measure your child. Most manufacturers create clubs for specific age ranges--typically, 3 to 5, 6 to 8 and 9 to 11--as a general guideline. The age ranges are for different club lengths, and the clubs get longer as the age ranges increase. However, height is more important than age. Take the club out of the bag. Have your child use it in the golf simulator at the store. If he's leaning too far over, the club is too short. If it's unwieldy and he struggles while holding it, it's too heavy.

Step 2

Estimate growth. Children grow rapidly and somewhat unpredictably. However, if your child is a tall 8-year-old, the next age group up is more appropriately fitted to her. If she's smaller than average for her age group, have her try the next size down. Clubs should last for about two years in most cases before you need to move up a size.

Step 3

Check the grip. Grip size is critical for kids to feel comfortable hitting. If the grip is too narrow or thick, but the club length is comfortable, see if the pro shop can re-grip the club or try a different manufacturer.

Step 4

Schedule a fitting for your teenager. While young children can use clubs that are designated by age group and club length, teenagers are typically close to finishing their growth surges and can use more carefully fitted clubs. A fitting ensures that the club length and weight are appropriate for your teen golfer.

Step 5

Look for a grow package. Because children constantly are growing, getting a properly fitted club can be an imprecise process. However, many manufacturers offer packages that allow you trade-in the existing clubs for credit toward the next size up from the same manufacturer, making it possible to keep up with your child's growth and provide properly fitted clubs as he grows.
