Walking

Experiencing Boston on foot is an educational and calorie burning exercise. Walk into history on the 2.5-mile Freedom Trail. Walkers follow the red brick path that meanders through Boston to explore the 16 significant historical landmarks. Explore the American Revolution by viewing historic churches, burial sites, parks, ships and museums. Learn about Paul Revere and the USS Constitution on a self-guided or guided walking trip.

Biking

Biking is a popular daytime activity for locals and visitors. Urban AdvenTours rents hybrid, road, fixed gear and tandem bicycles for day or weekend use. Renters are provided helmets and maps of the city to help them navigate among streets and paths. Tours operate year-round for riders to experience an educational ride to the historic Emerald Necklace, Charles River, Boston Harbor or Fenway Park. Retail and repair services are also available.

Kayaking

Charles River Canoe and Kayak features rentals for visitors wanting to paddle Boston waters. Offering several sizes of kayaks and canoes, this organization allows hourly or daily rentals. Lessons, day trips and tours are also available for paddlers. Tours include kayaking or canoeing the Charles River, Boston Harbor or the Barking Crab area; ocean tours are also available. Customized tours for groups are available for special occasions.

Day Trips

Visitors can explore the majestic views of Boston Harbor Islands. Pure natural landscapes engulf visitors with swimming beaches, hiking trails and ocean views. A total of 34 islands surround the Boston Harbor, but only 12 are explorable. From walking to swimming, visitors can escape the fast pace of city life in this natural bliss. Visitors use the Harbor Express ferry from Long Wharf to access the Georges or Spectacle islands. Itineraries should be planned accordingly, in order to make the last ferry ride to Boston.

Golfers

The Newton Commonwealth Golf Course is a challenging 18-hole course located minutes away from downtown Boston in Newton. This course was designed by architect Donald Ross. From narrow fairways to water and sand bunkers, many obstacles and challenges keep the course interesting.

Golfers can also take a swing at the public William J. Devine Golf Course, in Franklin Park. This 6,009-yard, 18-hole course is located in Dorchester which is still within city limits.
