Blackheads, also known as open comedones, are a common symptom of acne. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, more than 17 million people struggle with acne in the United States, making it the most common skin disease in the country. Blackheads appear when hair follicles become clogged and turn dark at the skin's surface. Facial masks containing gentle ingredients such as oatmeal, egg whites and herbs, can help get rid of blackheads naturally. Use a facial mask once or twice a week as needed, in conjunction with a daily cleansing and moisturizing routine.
Step 1
Bring 1/2 cup water to a rolling boil over medium-high heat. Add the dried parsley, turn off the heat, cover, and allow the mixture to steep for about 10 minutes.
Step 2
Place the rolled oats in a blender or coffee grinder while the parsley is steeping. Turn on medium speed, and process until a coarse powder is achieved.
Step 3
Transfer the powdered oats to a small mixing bowl, and set aside. Strain the parsley from the liquid, and discard the spent herbs.
Step 4
Add 2 tbsp. of the remaining parsley tea to the powdered oats, and stir well to combine. You should have a thick, paste-like consistency.
Step 5
Stir in the egg white and essential oil, if using. For best results, use an essential oil that benefits acne-prone skin. Omit the oil if you have very sensitive skin.
Step 6
Use the facial mask immediately, and discard any leftovers. Make a fresh batch each time to ensure maximum freshness and effectiveness. To use, spread the mask over your face, leave on 15 to 20 minutes, and rinse well with tepid water.
Tips and Warnings
- If using a coffee grinder to powder the rolled oats, make sure it is completely clean and free of coffee granules before you begin. The caffeine in coffee may irritate acne-prone skin. If you don't have access to dried parsley leaves, use 4 tbsp. fresh parsley, or substitute 2 tbsp. apple cider vinegar or freshly-squeezed lemon juice for the parsley tea. In her book "The Complete Book of Essential Oils and Aromatherapy," Valerie Ann Worwood recommends bergamot, cypress, lavender, tea tree, clary-sage or lemongrass essential oils for getting rid of blackheads.
