Mangoes abound in the summer months when tropical fruits line produce aisles. The fruit is sweet and juicy, and you can enjoy it alone, in a fruit salad or use chunks in salsa or on fish to add a sweet, tart flavor. Mangoes are usually round or oblong and can range in weight from 6 oz. to 5 lbs., according to the American Dietetic Association.
Mango Slices
Step 1
Slice the mango in half along the longest part of the fruit as close to the seed as possible.
Step 2
Cut long, thin slices of the fruit off each half until only the seed remains.
Step 3
Use a peeler or paring knife to remove the skin from each section of fruit.
Mango Chunks
Step 1
Cut the mango in half lengthwise on either side of the seed. Discard the seed.
Step 2
Use a sharp knife to create a grid pattern in the fruit's flesh by making several scores horizontally and vertically along the exposed fruit. Do not cut through the peel on the other side.
Step 3
Hold the mango half in both hands and use your fingers to push up on the center of the peel so that the skin pushes up and forces the mango chunks out. You may need to gently pull the chunks from the peel if they do not pop out on their own.
Tips and Warnings
- Mango slices are an excellent way to enjoy the fruit alone, while chunks are a good choice for fruit salads or for mixing in salsas and sauces.
- Always move the knife or peeler away from you to when peeling the skin to avoid cutting yourself.
