Numerous types of diseases or disorders are associated with hyperactivity. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health, hyperactivity is a state of excessive muscle activity or a situation in which a specific body part is too active. According to the NIH, hyperactive behavior is often associated with the following characteristics: constant movement, aggressiveness, impulsiveness, lack of concentration and being easily distracted.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a condition associated with hyperactivity. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, which is a division of the National Institutes of Health, ADHD is a common childhood disorder and can last through the teenage years and into adulthood. ADHD is characterized by an inability to stay focused and pay attention, difficulty regulating behavior and hyperactive or overactive behavior. The NIMH states that ADHD has three principle subtypes: predominantly hyperactive-impulsive, predominantly inattentive, and combined hyperactive-impulsive and inattentive. Although experts are not sure what causes ADHD, the condition is believed to be multifactorial or caused by many different factors, with a person's genes playing the most significant role. Other possible causes of ADHD include environmental factors such as cigarette smoking, brain injuries, nutrition and a child's social environment.

Restless Leg Syndrome

Restless leg syndrome is a condition associated with hyperactivity. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke states that restless leg syndrome is a neurological disorder in which a person experiences an uncontrollable urge to move his legs when at rest. Patients with restless leg syndrome often describe the unwanted leg sensations as burning, creeping or tugging. Restless leg syndrome-related symptoms are often felt most acutely when lying down and attempting to relax, which means that most people experience the leg sensations at night while lying in bed. According to the NINDS, if the condition is left untreated, a person can experience difficulty falling asleep and will wake up feeling tired.

Fragile X Syndrome

Fragile X syndrome is a disease associated with hyperactivity. According to the National Fragile X Foundation, which is an organization dedicated to promoting public and professional awareness of fragile X syndrome, fragile x syndrome is a family of genetic conditions that causes a variety of physical and intellectual limitations, along with abnormal emotional responses and behavior. The NFXF states that alterations in the FMR1 gene can cause one of three possible conditions: fragile X syndrome, fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome or fragile X-associated primary ovarian insufficiency. According to the March of Dimes, common symptoms associated with fragile x syndrome include some degree of intellectual impairment or learning difficulty, behavior problems and hyperactivity, speech problems, anxiety and mood disorders and sensitivity to light, sound, touch and textures.
