Continuous positive airway pressure, or CPAP, is a treatment used for those suffering from sleep apnea. Sleep apnea occurs when the muscles that support the soft palate relax and block the airway. Other forms of this condition indicate a failure of the brain to signal the breathing muscles to inflate the lungs. Sleep apnea can be extremely serious and possibly life threatening. The CPAP systems use mild air pressure to keep the airway open and you breathing. Humidifying air on a CPAP unit elevates some of the dryness associated with the device. Adding menthol to humidified water might help with congestion and other respiratory problems.
Step 1
Set up the CPAP unit following the instructions provided with the product. If using a CPAP unit with a separate humidifier, place both devices at the same level. If the humidifier is higher than the CPAP machine, water may enter the CPAP.
Step 2
Fill the water chamber of the humidifying unit with distilled water. Add two drops of menthol oil to the water. Follow the dosage instructions provided with the oil or prescribed by your doctor.
Step 3
Lie down in a comfortable position. Place the face mask over your mouth or nose. Some masks will cover both areas. Turn the unit on.
Tips and Warnings
- Follow the instructions for cleaning the unit. Do not leave water standing in the humidifier over long periods of time. Fill the container with fresh water after every use. Standing water can accumulate bacteria or fungus that will infect your lungs if inhaled.
- Only use a CPAP machine if your doctor recommends it for your condition. CPAP masks can cause skin irritation and pressure sores if not used correctly. Do not add menthol to your humidifier without talking to your doctor first. It may be ill advised to use menthol with some medical conditions. Your doctor will know if menthol is right for you. Do not use a CPAP unit as a replacement for medical care. If suffering from sleep apnea, see your doctor. If you find yourself falling asleep, and then waking up suddenly gasping for air, you may have sleep apnea and should seek medical help.
