If you wish to improve your upper body strength, chin-up exercises are an excellent way of reaching your goal. However, if the only place you can find a chin-up bar is at a gym, you may find it difficult to stay motivated. By installing a bar in your home, you will be able to perform your exercises at your convenience, which will help you maintain your regimen. Many models of chin-up bar are designed for installation above a door frame; the process is straightforward, but requires accurate measurements in order to ensure a proper fit.

Step 1

Stand on the side of the door frame opposite of where you want to perform your exercises. Use the measuring tape to measure the distance between the outside edges of the door frame, then measure the distance between the mounting holes on the chin-up bar's frame.

Step 2

Subtract the distance between mounting holes from the distance between door frame edges and divide the result by 2; note the final result.

Step 3

Unfold the stepladder and place it next to the door frame. Climb the stepladder and place one end of the measuring tape against the left edge of the door frame. Pull the tape towards the center of the door frame and use a pencil to mark off a distance equal to the final result of your earlier calculations. Repeat this process on the right side of the door frame.

Step 4

Draw a line straight up from each of your earlier markings. Place the left bracket over the left line; adjust the bracket until you are able to see the line through the hole in the mounting bracket. Lift the bracket upwards until the bottom end of the bracket is an inch above the door frame. Use the pencil to mark the location of the mounting bracket hole on the wall. Repeat this process with the right bracket.

Step 5

Use the power drill to drill holes into the wall through each of the hole markings. Insert wall anchors into each of the holes. Align the holes on the mounting bracket over each wall anchor. Use screws to secure the brackets to the wall anchors.

Step 6

Join the pieces of the chin-up bar assembly together. Use nuts and bolts to secure the pieces together. Lift the completed assembly upwards and insert the mounting bar into the brackets.
