Norvasc is the brand name for the drug amlodipine besylate. This medication is a type of calcium channel blocker and is used to alleviate chest pain and high blood pressure. Norvasc works by dilating the blood vessels, which helps the heart pump blood more easily through the body. Treatment with Norvasc is not appropriate for all patients. Before using this medication, patients should discuss the contraindications for Norvasc with a medication professional.
Norvasc Allergy or Hypersensitivity
Patients with a known allergy or sensitivity to Norvasc, any of its components or amlodipine should not take this medication, PRDHealth advises. Use of Norvasc by hypersensitive patients can induce a potentially life-threatening anaphylactic allergic reaction.
Pregnancy
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has classified Norvasc as pregnancy category C, Drugs.com reports. This medication may harm a developing baby and women who are pregnant should not take Norvasc unless otherwise instructed by a doctor. It is unknown whether this medication can be passed on through a woman's breast milk. Breastfeeding mothers should discuss the use of Norvasc with a doctor before taking this medication.
Under Age 6
The efficacy and safety of Norvasc have not been clinically evaluated in children under the age of 6, RxList explains. Children in this age group should not take Norvasc unless otherwise instructed by a doctor.
