Maintaining the health of your scalp is an important part of achieving soft, nourished and manageable hair. Dry scalps can be itchy, flaky and prone to dandruff and other conditions. Use products designed to treat and moisturize your scalp, combat any dandruff or buildup and increase the overall health and vitality of your hair. If you experience severe scalp dryness or excessive itching and flaking, you may need prescription-strength products. Talk to your doctor if you think this option is necessary.

Step 1

Wash your hair once a day with an anti-dandruff shampoo that has been designed both to treat a dry scalp and to provide relief from itching. The shampoo should claim to moisturize your hair and scalp, as well as rid your scalp of dry or flaking skin. Wet your hair and use your fingertips to massage the shampoo onto your scalp and through your hair, then rinse.

Step 2

Condition your hair and scalp each time you shampoo. Select a product that promises to provide moisture, protection and conditioning to both dry hair and scalp. Apply the conditioner from your hair's roots to the tips and massage it into your scalp as well, which will increase blood flow and circulation. Rinse it out thoroughly.

Step 3

When your hair is dry, massage your scalp with a hairbrush that has ball-tipped and copper-laced bristles. These brushes have been designed to help fight the bacteria on your scalp that can lead to dandruff and flaking, says Allure.

Step 4

Use a deep-conditioning scalp treatment designed to moisturize and replenish your dry hair and scalp once a week. Ouidad salon suggests adding 1 tbsp. of clove oil and 1 tbsp. of crushed almonds into a deep conditioner. This will enhance the product's nourishing properties and exfoliate your scalp, ridding it of dandruff, excess oil and other types of buildup. Mix the clove oil and almonds thoroughly into the product and massage the blend onto your scalp. Leave it on for 20 minutes before rinsing.

Tips and Warnings

  • Apply sunscreen to your part before going outdoors. Sunburn can increase scalp dryness. Be sure to rinse products out of your hair thoroughly. Left over product can lead to build-up and make your scalp itchy.
