Wrestlers will commonly cut weight before a match because it gives them an advantage over smaller opponents. If you can cut 10 or more pounds before your weigh-in, and efficiently regain the weight before your match, you will weigh more than your opponent will and could have a strength advantage as a result. The supervision of your coach is recommended, but learning safe and efficient ways to cut weight before your match could lead you to a much more successful wrestling career.
Limiting Fluids
Eliminating water weight from your body remains the most common way to lose weight before a fight. Stop drinking water about 24 hours before you weigh in, as this allows the fluids in your body time to escape through your sweat and urine. This method can help you to lose five or six pounds in a 24-hour period and will not cause any long-term problems if done correctly, because you will not completely dehydrate yourself.
Fasting
Limiting the amount of food you eat helps the weight loss process, as it helps to clean out your bowels. Since food stays in the bowels for up to 24 hours, eating very little for a 24-hour period before a weigh-in can help you lose between five and seven pounds through your bowel movements. The body does not need this waste, so losing it will not hurt your performance. Some wrestlers even use a natural laxative to aid this process.
Exercise
Simple cardio exercises, such as running, help you sweat and eliminate fluids from your body. Even if you have a very lean body, this process helps because you carry a significant amount of water regardless of your body type. While some wrestlers exercise in heavy clothing or rubber suits to increase body temperatures and sweat more, the American College of Sports Medicine does not recommend these methods, as they can lead to health difficulties.
Sweating It Out
Sitting in a sauna can help you to lose weight, although you should only use this method under a coach's supervision. Spend only between 15 and 30 minutes in the sauna at one time. Always monitor how much weight you have lost after each session, because the heat makes you very weak and because you do not want to lose too much weight. You will sweat a great deal in the sauna, making it possible for you to shed the final few pounds, if you have run into problems while cutting weight.
