Many women opt to remove bikini-line hair that appears above or outside of the areas covered by a swimsuit bottom or underwear. There are various effective ways of temporarily removing the hair, but the only permanent way to remove it is with laser hair removal treatment, according to the American Dermatology Association. Individuals with lighter hair might have less success with laser treatment when compared with darker-haired people. In this case, withdrawing the hair at the root, including tweezing or waxing, is the next best option.
Permanent Hair Removal
Step 1
Schedule an appointment with a certified or licensed cosmetologist or esthetician who performs laser hair removal. The first appointment will be a consultation to determine if permanent hair removal is the right choice. An estimate of cost for the treatment can be obtained at this time.
Step 2
Allow the unwanted hair to grow prior to the laser treatment appointment. Avoid tanning beds or sunless tanning products, states the American Association of Dermatologists. Sunscreen should be worn daily prior to the appointment, but nothing should be applied to the skin the day of the treatment, including lotions.
Step 3
Relax during the laser treatment. The pain is similar to a quick snap from a rubber band against the skin.
Step 4
Follow post-treatment instructions given by the technician. A calming gel might be applied after the treatment to reduce any swelling or inflammation.
Step 5
Repeat the laser treatments as recommended by the technician. This typically means one appointment every three weeks, depending on the speed of hair growth. Many women will have success after six or eight appointments.
Temporary Hair Removal
Step 1
Apply a mild soap or cleanser to a wash cloth wet with warm water. Gently rub the bikini-line area with the soap and cloth in a circular motion. This exfoliating technique will help raise hairs to make them easier to remove.
Step 2
Pat the area dry.
Step 3
Disinfect a pair of tweezers by rubbing them with cotton balls soaked in rubbing alcohol.
Step 4
Pluck each unwanted hair by grasping the strand as close to the skin as possible. Pull the hair outward with steady force or a quick jerk, depending on which is more comfortable. Quick pulls can increase the risk of the hair breaking off, turning inward and eventually becoming an ingrown hair.
Step 5
Cleanse the skin again with soap and warm water to remove any dirt and minimize the risk of infection.
