Summer in Las Vegas attracts families from around the country to try their luck in the casinos. Tourists and locals alike can enjoy activities that don't involve gambling while in Las Vegas. These activities don't only save you some money, but also allow you to get some exercise and fresh air while enjoying the scenery of Las Vegas during your summer vacation.

Swimming

Las Vegas offers a variety of different swimming opportunities for kids on summer vacation. There are local community pools, both indoors and outdoors. For hotel guests there are pools to swim in, as well. Some of these aren't just pools, but entertainment complexes with multiple pools and waterways where you can float on a raft. There are even wave pools at several locations in Las Vegas where you can experience ocean-like waves hundreds of miles inland.

Hiking

Hiking opportunities surround Las Vegas. There are parks where children can hike around lakes such as Lake Meade. They can also go and explore nature while hiking on paths through the mountains. Less than an hour's drive away is the Hoover Dam, where children can see the power of water that supplies electricity to Las Vegas.

Biking

Take a bike ride up and down the Las Vegas Strip and enjoy the sights of the hotels and decorations such as pirate ships and volcanoes. Just be careful to pay close attention to traffic signals and pedestrians. For a less crowded bike ride, local parks offer bike paths.

Skateboarding

Las Vegas has skateboard parks located in several parts of town. This allows children during summer vacation to practice their various skateboard tricks. Be sure to bring plenty of water though, as Las Vegas temperatures during the summer frequently top 100 degrees.

Sporting Activities

Sometimes you just have to make your own fun when on vacation. Las Vegas offers parks and other areas with baseball fields, tennis courts and basketball courts to play on. Both grass and sand volleyball courts are available to play on as well. If you want to get off the land, take fishing lessons or those experienced at fishing can enjoy a day trying to catch fish in the waterways of Las Vegas and the surrounding area.
