A double chin can be the result of different causes. Although the natural aging process may be one cause, others may include obesity, genetics and poor posture. For some people, excess fat below the jawline may be unattractive. While cosmetic surgery can correct this problem, there are also non-invasive methods that may help to improve muscle tone in this area. By doing exercises that work specific muscles of the face and neck, you may be able to get rid of a double chin.

Throat, Neck and Chin Stretching Exercises

Step 1

Sit in a chair with your back erect and place your hands on your thighs, advised the Chinese Holistic Health website.

Step 2

Move your lower lip up over your upper lip. Keep your lips in this position throughout this stretching exercise.

Step 3

Lift your head up toward the ceiling while breathing in slowly through your nostrils. Remain in this position for six seconds.

Step 4

Breathe out slowly as you move your head back down to the start position. Do 10 repetitions of this exercise at least twice a day.

Step 5

Sit erect in a chair with your hands on your thighs again. Put your lower lip over the upper lip. Lift your head up and tilt it sideways over your right shoulder. Move your head down until your chin makes contact with your shoulder. Stay in this position for six seconds. Return to the start position by lowering your head to your chest and then rolling your head until you are facing forward.

Step 6

Do the same thing to stretch and tone your neck muscles on the other side. Your raised head should be looking over your left shoulder this time.

Step 7

Do six repetitions, twice a day of these exercises. These exercises may help to tone facial, throat and neck muscles, according to the website Chinese Holistic Health Exercises.

Platysma Muscle Exercise

Step 1

Keep your spine erect and your hands on your thighs while sitting in a chair. Your head should be straight and looking forward.

Step 2

Close your mouth tightly and raise your head back slowly until you are looking straight up at the sky or ceiling. Relax your lips.

Step 3

Open your lips, extend your tongue out and attempt to place the tip of your tongue on your nose. Remain in this position up to a count of 12. Do this exercise three times and then return to the start position. This exercise may be useful in reducing a double chin because it may tone and tighten the platysma muscle, suggests the website Lose a Double Chin. This muscle extends from the face to the chest area, explains mothernature.com.

Tips and Warnings

Chewing gum may help to tone jaw muscles, suggests the website Exercise Goals. A cosmetic surgery procedure, such as submental lipectomy, may be an option for some people.
