As the largest organ of the body and one that is constantly exposed to the elements, we need to treat our skin with tender loving care. When we are born, our skin is one millimeter thick. When we become adults, it doubles in thickness, thinning down again as we age. Skin insulates and protects the body against the invasion of foreign elements, is beautifully sensory, and helps to control body temperature through the distribution of heat and by preventing hydration. Our skin is in constant need of nourishment and protection. By keeping skin well lubricated, we lessen the effects of weather and other invasive elements. Through proper moisturizing and nutrition as well as protection against the damaging rays of the sun, skin will exude a healthy radiance no matter what our age.
What to Look for
When looking for moisturizing lotions, it is important to seek out those with pure, natural ingredients that are easily absorbed. There are a myriad of lotions available in the marketplace that are made specifically for different areas of the body. Body lotion has a different consistency than hand or foot lotion, as does an after-shave lotion and a face moisturizing lotion. Oil or cream based lotions are both excellent choices, depending on your skin type. Find lotions that have a combination of free amino acids and other moisture attracting elements such as lactic acid, urea and salts which preserve fluid in skin and provide a defense against aging. Ingredients such as vitamin A, C, and E are excellent antioxidants, converting free radicals into elements that are easily eliminated. Natural products such as shea butter and aloe vera are ideal for combating the effects of dryness and aging. Try to pick lotions that contain SPFs that will counteract the damaging effects of the sun. For the best moisturizing results, apply lotions to skin after a shower or bath while skin is still damp.
Common Pitfalls
People with sensitive skin should do a skin patch test for allergic reactions before applying a lotion. Buy a small sample before you commit to a brand. Commercial skincare products can contain elements that cause allergies as well as harmful chemicals, so it is best to choose natural products. Use lotions that are fragrance-free if you are sensitive to them. If you enjoy fragrance, make sure it is naturally derived from herbs such as rosemary or fruits such as lemon. If have chronic skin conditions like eczema, rosacea or psoriasis, see your doctor before applying commercial lotions as they can often exacerbate skin problems. You don't need to spend a lot of money on effective lotion as there are many excellent affordable brands. Most important, remember that lotion use must be supported by a regular diet of fruit and vegetables, lots of water, and a regular exercise regimen to eliminate toxins.
