American families are spending more time apart and less time bonding. Blame it on factors such as parents working longer hours, longer work commutes and children's increasingly busy schedules. In the end, many parents and children barely see each other five days a week, according to a report from MSNBC.com. One bold step towards reclaiming your family time is doing fun activities together.

Family Sports Days

Work up a sweat and have a ball playing favorite sports together. You can each take turns selecting the sport and thus keep things interesting by alternating between several, such as soccer, tennis, Frisbee, biking or bowling. Your sports day can either be a friendly and casual event, or it can be competitive with victors, medals---the whole works. Make sure that you pack refillable water bottles so everyone stays well-hydrated. Don't be shy about choosing sports you haven't played before; this way, everyone starts off on the same level.

Weekly Dances

Not only is dancing a fun group activity, it's also a great way to exercise and stay fit. Keep things interesting by choosing different types of music, dancing to music from different decades or trying out the latest dances on YouTube. If your teens are reluctant, encourage them to invite their friends and make a party of it. Dancing at home may also encourage your kids to pick up dance classes.

Backyard Camping

Forget trekking hundreds of miles to a remote campground. Your own backyard is safe, free and provides easy access to a bathroom. Set up a few tents and roll out the sleeping bags. Bring along portable lamps or light up a fire pit. Bring enough food and snacks to last until the next day, to capture the essence of camping. Have fun as a family--which means video games are off limits. Sing camp songs, roast marshmallows or tell ghost stories.

Weekend Community Tours

If you haven't taken your children to a local museum, art gallery, historical site or nature trail, it's time. In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, you can easily forget to stop and appreciate the many fascinating places in your community. Research local attractions on the Internet, and be sure to take advantage of family discount packages. Your family will have a great time discovering your city or town together without breaking your budget.

Family Gardening

Share with your kids an appreciation for nature and the thrill of growing their own food. It's a rapidly rising trend as families seek to eat healthier and save money, according to Pennsylvania State University's website. Spend an evening or a day on the weekend picking out seeds and seedlings together. Letting your child choose their own flowers, vegetables and fruits will encourage their interest even more. Then put on some gloves and start planting. You can also take the opportunity to share eco-friendly gardening ideas with your children.
