Ear wax, or cerumen, works to protect the inner ear from dust and other objects. Some people develop more ear wax than others, causing a buildup. Many people think using a cotton swab can clean the ear, but it poses a risk of damaging the inner ear and can push wax further into the ear, causing blockage. There are a few cautious ear wax home remedies you can use to keep your ears clean.
Soften the Ear Wax
Ear wax can be softened by a few different liquids that you probably have around the house. Use a dropper to add a few drops of hydrogen peroxide, baby oil, mineral oil, glycerin or store-bought ear drops to loosen the wax. Let the drops soften the wax before gently rinsing out your ears with a syringe. Do this for a few days to remove wax buildup.
Irrigate Your Ears
Irrigate your ears with water to try to loosen or dislodge the ear wax. Medline Plus recommends using body-temperature water for this, as cooler water can cause dizziness. Hold your head straight while you gently pull your outer ear upwards to straighten out your ear canal. Carefully squirt the water into your ear with a syringe. Lean your head to the side to drain your ear. You can try this method a few times, but you may need to contact a doctor if you are unsuccessful in dislodging the ear wax on your own.
Dry Your Ears Carefully
You should never put anything inside your ears, for cleaning or drying. You can pat your ears dry with a towel, or use a blow dryer on a low setting to finish drying your ears. The "Doctor's Book of Home Remedies" suggests dropping a little alcohol in each ear to complete the drying process.
Clean Your Ears
Clean your ears in the future to prevent more wax buildup. Wash or add a softening fluid to your ears once a month to keep your condition under control. Do not do this too often, as you need some ear wax to protect the inside of your ear from debris.
