Organic soaps contain natural, rather than chemical ingredients. In place of dyes, harsh detergents and preservatives, organic soaps use ingredients such as shea butter, essentials oils and glycerin. These ingredients can be of great benefit if you have sensitive skin or suffer from allergies. Glycerin is a natural moisturizer you can combine with any number of colorings and scents to make homemade organic soap.

Step 1

Melt the glycerin soap base in a bowl the microwave or on the stove in a double boiler until a thermometer placed in the glycerin reaches a temperature of 55 degrees Celsius or 155 degrees Fahrenheit. According to NaturalPureSoap.com, the key is to use low heat and melt the glycerin slowly, so set your microwave to 50 percent or set the stove top burner to low. Remove from the heat source when the glycerin reaches the desired temperature.

Step 2

Stir in drops of soap coloring until the liquid is the color you desire.

Step 3

Add fragrance, if desired. TheDailyGreen.com suggests using extracts or essential oils as fragrance ingredients. Add fragrance sparingly as a few drops go a long way.

Step 4

Pour the liquid glycerin into soap molds and let it cool for a minimum of one hour or until completely cool.

Tips and Warnings

  • Check at your local craft supply store or online retailer for soap making supplies. Because organic glycerin soap "sweats," NaturalPureSoap.com recommends storing it in plastic wrap to prevent the soap from attracting moisture from the air.
