When you experience darkened, purple circles under the eyes, you can appear older or more tired than you are. Because normal makeup you use on your skin may not cover these dark circles, using a concealer can help. However, there are pitfalls if you use concealer incorrectly. Too light can make you look like a raccoon and too much can cause creases in your skin. The area underneath the eye is also delicate, making a light touch important to an effective concealer application.
Step 1
Select the right shade of concealer by choosing one that is roughly two shades lighter than your skin, according to Glamour.com. Test the concealer shades underneath your eye--testing them on other areas of your skin do not give you the best idea of a color shade. If you have dark circles under your eyes, a yelow-ish concealer can help to neutralize the color.
Step 2
Dab a firming eye cream under the eye with your ring finger. Real Simple magazine recommends using an eye cream that has light-reflecting or lightening pigments--vitamin K is one example ingredient.
Step 3
Dip a small, soft-bristled brush in your concealer--or if you concealer is in a tube, squeeze some onto the brush. Begin by dabbing the concealer directly underneath your lower lash line.
Step 4
Fan the concealer downward toward your cheek, according to Glamour.com. This helps your concealer to appear more natural. Don't forget to also place concealer on the area between the eyebrow and your upper lash line--this area also can have darkened veins, according to More magazine.
Step 5
Dip an angled makeup sponge or powder puff into loose powder and pat underneath the eye to set the concealer in place. This helps to reduce the risk of creases and helps your concealer to stay on longer during the day, according to Real Simple.
Tips and Warnings
- If you have trouble with concealer creasing, utilizing a makeup primer can help, according to More magazine. Primers typically contain silicone, which is absorbed bu the skin when applied. This helps your makeup to glide on more easily.
- If you apply undereye concealer with your fingers, be sure to use your ring finger. Your index finger is stronger and therefore can damage the skin under your eye. The ring finger is a better choice for applying concealer.
