Alphagan P is a medication that is commonly used to treat open angle glaucoma, which is a condition in which the pressure in the eye increases, resulting in damage to the optic nerve. Alphagan P, which is the brand name for brimonidine, is administered in the form of eye drops. This medication can cause some serious side effects in some patients.
Eyes
Many of the side effects of using Alphagan P involve the eyes. Patients taking this medication may notice redness or irritation of the eyes, PDRHealth explains. Alphagan P can also cause the eyes to itch or burn. Other side effects of Alphagan P use include visual disturbances, swollen or reddened eyelids, and a feeling that a foreign object is caught in the eye. Patients may also experience increased light sensitivity. Cardiovascular
In some instances, Alphagan P can have a powerful effect on the cardiovascular system, RxList reports. This can cause the heart rate to either speed up, known as tachycardia, or become slowed, also referred to as bradycardia. These changes in heart rate can also cause blood pressure to become elevated or dangerously low. Patients can also develop breathing problems due to Alphagan P.
Gastrointestinal
The gastrointestinal system can be disturbed by Alphagan P. This can result in nausea and an upset stomach, Drugs.com explains. Alphagan P has also been linked with dry mouth as well as the development of an unpleasant or unusual taste in the mouth.
Constitutional Symptoms
Drowsiness and fatigue have been reported by patients taking Alphagan P, so patients using this medication should avoid operating heavy machinery or performing activities that require alertness. Other side effects that this medication can cause are dizziness, headache, muscle pains and insomnia.
Allergic
In some cases, an allergic reaction may be triggered by using Alphagan P. Mild cases result in the development of a rash or hives. Stronger allergic reactions can cause swelling of the face, lips and tongue, or can result in the eyelids becoming extremely swollen and red. Anaphylaxis, the most severe form of allergic reaction, results in swelling of the throat, which can obstruct breathing and swallowing. Patients experiencing any signs of an allergic reaction to Alphagan P should stop taking the medication immediately in order to avoid anaphylaxis.
