Many companies and organizations interview candidates over the phone to save time and money. Some employers might use phone interviews as a preliminary screening system before selecting candidates for in-person interviews. Though phone interviews can be more convenient than in-person interviews, some people might find it more difficult to make a clear and positive impression over the phone. Keep certain strategies in mind when interviewing over the phone to ensure that you project your best self.
Preparation
Research the company or organization for which you will be interviewing as well as the particular job available. Review the job description and qualification requirements and make lists of experiences that have prepared you to fulfill the job's duties. Compile a list of your strengths and weaknesses, or a list of experiences in which you demonstrated specific strengths. Compile a list of questions to ask the interviewer about the job.
Set Up
Find a quiet place to receive the interview phone call, and make sure friends, family members or roommates know not to interrupt you. Place your resume in front of you to refer to during the interview, and have pen and paper ready for note taking. Have a glass of water nearby in case your throat becomes dry during the interview.
During the Interview
Speak slowly and clearly into the phone to ensure that the interviewer can hear you. Enunciate your words more than you might if talking to a friend. Take a few moments to think about the interviewer's questions before answering, and ask for clarification if necessary. Make your point and then stop talking rather than rambling on and on. Many career centers at schools such as Yale University and Babson College recommend that you smile during your interview to project an upbeat attitude. Standing up during the interview can help you project energy and enthusiasm.
After the Interview
Before you hang up, reiterate your interest in the position and thank the interviewer for her time. Follow up after the interview with a thank-you note. Reiterate your interest once again in this note, and highlight the reasons why you think you would be a good fit for the position.
