Hair is a fiber made of protein that must be carefully cared for in order to grow sufficiently and stay healthy. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, both the hair fiber and the root from which it originates must be maintained properly to avoid split, dead ends that lead to frizzy hair that stops growing. Take care to treat split ends that cause hair strands to unravel.
Step 1
Cut off dead ends as soon as they appear. According to stylists at Hair Finder, there is no remedy for split ends. When the end of a hair strand splits, the split continues to travel up the length of the hair. It's best to cut off the ends when splits first appear because the longer you wait, the more you'll have to chop off.
Step 2
Reduce the number of times you wash your hair each week. People with dry scalps can wash their hair as little as once a week. When you do wash your hair, wash only the scalp and avoid shampooing the fragile hair tips. Shampoo can dry hair out and is only needed to clean excess oil and dirt from the scalp. The ends of hairs can stay clean and fresh with rinsing when the shampoo runs down the hair shafts.
Step 3
Apply conditioner liberally to prevent additionally damage to long hair. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, two-in-one shampoo and conditioners are effective for treating long, damaged hair. Leave-in conditioners also can help to maintain the ends of the hair to allow hair to continue growing long and strong.
Step 4
Comb hair with a wide-toothed comb to avoid additional breakage. Let hair air dry as much as possible and comb the tangles out prior to doing any styling.
Tips and Warnings
- According to the American Academy of Dermatology, expensive brushes made of boar's hair damage sensitive hair strands and actually prevent growth. Cheaper, plastic hairbrushes with tines spaced widely apart are much more effective and easier on the hair.
- Keep split ends away from heat sources such as hair dryers and curling irons. The hot appliances are one of the main causes of split ends and will exacerbate damaged hair conditions.
