The KeepKidsHealthy website states that constipation is a common problem for children. It is defined by hard, painful stools or not having a bowel movement for four or more days. Once constipation develops and a child has painful stool, he may begin to hold in bowel movements to prevent pain. This creates a cycle that can make constipation worse. Fortunately, there are ways to manage your child's constipation symptoms.
Step 1
Increase the amount of fluids your child consumes each day. The KidsHealth website suggests giving two or three more glasses of fruit juice or water than usual.
Step 2
Feed your child foods that are rich in fiber, such as fruits, bran cereal and vegetables. The FamilyDoctor website explains that extra fiber can help your child pass stool.
Step 3
Encourage exercise. Get your child outside to play basketball, ride his bike or any other entertaining form of exercise. The KidsHealth states that activity helps to move the bowels.
Step 4
Decrease your child's consumption of constipating foods such as dairy products, bananas and cooked carrots. Consider switching to soy milk to help soften stool.
Step 5
Establish a regular bowel routine with your child. The FamilyDoctor website recommends asking your child to sit on the toilet for approximately 10 minutes around the same time each day, preferably after eating. Teach him to use the bathroom when he feels the urge to move his bowels.
Step 6
Give your child an over-the-counter medication for constipation. The KeepKidsHealthy website says to use these medications one or two times a day, gradually increasing the dose until your child has a normal, soft bowel movement.
Tips and Warnings
- The FamilyDoctor website suggests rewarding your child every time she successfully has a bowel movement. Reward her with her favorite activity or simply just praise her. Consider using a chart where you can place stars or stickers. Older children may enjoy earning points for a large reward such as a movie date or trip to the park.
- According to the KidsHealth website, constipation can be a sign of a medical condition called irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS. Besides constipation, this condition can cause pain, gas and belly discomfort. IBS can be triggered by spicy or fatty foods and stress. Symptoms can generally be treated at home through supplements or medications.
