Skateboarding helps develop leg muscles and overall body balance as you learn to jump and maneuver on a small board. Skateboard tricks provide a never-ending challenge, with more tricks always to learn. Start with basic tricks that lead to more complicated stunts.

Manual

Step 1

Skate at a moderate speed to begin your manual or wheelie. If you skate too slowly, your manual will quickly run out of steam, but if you skate too fast, the manual may be hard to control.

Step 2

Stand with your back foot on the back edge or tail of the board and your front foot just behind the front wheels, as indicated by the bolts on top of the board that attach to the trucks or wheel mechanism underneath.

Step 3

Lean forward on the board to shift your center of gravity forward. Place most of your weight on the back foot. Push down gently on the back tail while bending your front knee. The front of the skateboard will rise off the ground.

Step 4

Ride the skateboard on the back wheels while carefully balancing. Put your arms straight out to your sides to help you balance. Push down on the front of the board when you want to end the manual or when you start to slow down to a stop.

Ollie

Step 1

Ride in the same stance as used during a manual to prepare for an ollie, or skateboard jump. Bend both knees. Stomp on the tail of the skateboard. The front of the board will immediately leap off the ground.

Step 2

Bend both knees. Pull both feet up as the board rises. Move your front foot toward the front of the skateboard while in midair to set up the landing stance, preventing the skateboard from rolling out from under you when you land.

Step 3

Fall back to the ground. Balance to keep the board under you so your landing goes smoothly.
