Depending on the person, hair on the upper lip can be dark and thick or light and fine. The darker type of hair is called terminal, and the lighter type is vellus. Although this hair--and all body hair, for that matter--is harmless, it can cause embarrassment, especially in women. Regardless of your gender, use home methods or see a professional to remove your hair.

Step 1

Seek out a certified electrologist to get the hair zapped out. With electrolysis, a specialist inserts a small needle into each hair follicle, and a current of electricity then gets sent to the tip. The hair follicle gets killed, and the hair itself falls out. Expect permanent hair removal with electrolysis.

Step 2

Wash your face and leave it wet to shave off the hair. Apply shaving cream to your lip area, take out a razor blade and move it downward across your skin in short, smooth strokes. Continue across your whole lip area until you've removed all the hair. This is one of the quickest ways to remove your hair, but it will only keep you hair free for about three days. Use a pair of scissors or electric clippers on your upper lip before shaving if the hair is really thick and long.

Step 3

Apply hot wax to your lip and rip out the hair. Use a home waxing kit that comes with an applicator stick. Follow the heating directions for the wax and apply it against the grain of the hair. When the wax becomes tacky, flatten the cloth strip across your hair and rip it off in a fast motion. This will keep your lip free of hair for three weeks to more than a month.

Step 4

Purchase a specially designed depilatory cream that is safe for the face. Apply a warm washcloth to your upper lip to soften the hair and then spread a liberal amount of cream on your hair. Let it set up for as long as recommended by the manufacturer and then wipe off the hair with a damp washcloth. Depilatories have active chemicals that dissolve hair and make it easy to wipe off. Expect your lip to be free of hair for two weeks or less.

Step 5

Grip the hair with a pair of tweezers to remove it for up to two months. Place the tweezers around a single hair close to the skin and squeeze firmly. Pull straight out in a steady but slow motion. Repeat with all the hairs you want removed.
