Herbal medicine is the oldest form of healthcare and involves the use of herbs for their therapeutic or medicinal value. Traditional Chinese herbalism, Ayurvedic herbalism and Western herbalism are the major classifications of herbal medicine. Herbalists prepare herbs for a variety of conditions and health-related purposes, including affecting sex hormones.

Ginseng, horny goat weed and tongkat ali are organic herbs used for increasing testosterone, the male sex hormone. There is not scientific evidence to support the effects of these herbs. Consult your physician before taking an herbal supplement.

Ginseng

Herbalists prepare traditional remedies with ginseng for increasing testosterone; this effect has not been scientifically proven. The Holistic Online website reports that American ginseng is the world's number one aphrodisiac and is used by native American tribes as a love potion. According to the Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, treating erectile dysfunction is among the uses of Asian ginseng. "Although Asian ginseng has been studied for a variety of uses, research results to date do not conclusively support health claims associated with the herb," adds the Center. Discuss ginseng with your doctor.

Horny Goat Weed

Epimedium is commonly called horny goat weed or yin yang huo in traditional Chinese herbalism. According to the Herbal Excel website, traditional healers have been using this plant for 2,000 years for treating sexual dysfunction and restoring passion. Drugs.com reports that horny goat weed has been "historically used as a natural sex stimulator by increasing testosterone production."

Tongkat Ali

Tongkat ali is a tree originating from Malaysia and Southeast Asia. Becky Ramdeholl, certified herbalist and trained naturopath, says that tongkat ali increases testosterone, stimluates sex drive, increases sperm count, reduces premature ejaculation and aids in maintaining erections. "Physical trainers and athletes have also been known to use tongkat ali to safely increase testosterone levels for increased muscle mass and definition," cites Ramdeholl. Due to limited scientific studies, the effects of tongkat ali can not be concluded. See your health care provider before taking this supplement.
