The small community of Honor, Michigan, is minutes away Traverse City as well as a host of other northern Michigan destinations. State Forest Campgrounds
State forest campgrounds feature rustic campsites that are typically in secluded settings. The amenities are limited to vault toilets and hand-pumped water wells. Three state forest campgrounds are located around Honor. On-site activities in these campgrounds include canoeing and kayaking, hiking, mountain biking, boating, wildlife watching and fishing. All state forest campgrounds in Michigan are located along a river or lakeshore and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. State forest campgrounds near Honor are Platte River, Veterans Memorial and Lake Ann.
State Park Campgrounds
State parks offer a greater number of amenities than their state forest counterparts. They are equipped with electrical hook-ups for campers and RVs and include showers and bathroom facilities. Interlochen State Park is the closest park to Honor. The park, established as Michigan's first state park in 1917, features a concession store, playground, children's programs and lake access. Rustic campsites, rental cabins and teepees are available in addition to the modern campground. The 200-acre park is located on Green and Duck lakes.
Private Campgrounds
Private campgrounds in the Honor area provide more amenities and services than state campgrounds. Sunny Woods Resort, located on the Platte River, provides motel rooms, modern cabins and cottages, RV sites and rustic camping sites. The variety of lodging options means you can stay at Sunny Woods during the winter season when cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling and ice fishing are the area's main attractions.
Shore-to-Shore Trail Camping
The shore-to-shore trail is a hiking and equestrian trail bisecting northern Michigan from Lake Huron to Lake Michigan. The western trail head is near Honor. Garey Lake Trail Camp, a state-run campground, is one of the many campgrounds along the trail. It is located north of Honor and features equestrian, hiking, fishing and wildlife viewing activities. The campground is on Garey Lake and is less than 10 miles from Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in Empire, making it an excellent base camp from which to hike to the vast dune system.
Area Attractions
Traverse City, located several miles to the west, hosts various summer festivals and features a downtown area full of interesting shops and restaurants. Just north of Traverse City are the Old Mission and Leelanau peninsulas. These two fingers reach out into Lake Michigan and are home to popular vineyards and wine tours. To the east of Honor is the 35-mile long Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Here you can hike across the massive natural dune system or take a ferry across to North and South Manitou Islands, part of the lakeshore that offers scenic and challenging hiking paths.
