Setting goals in life is important. Goals give you direction in your career and personal life, and they can help you achieve financial stability. You can set goals for anything, from your retirement savings to your leisure activities. Setting and achieving short-term goals can help keep you on the path toward your long-term goals.
Long-Term vs. Short-Term
A long-term goal is a goal that you plan to reach in the next five or 10 years, or even longer. For example, you might have a long-term goal to save $10,000 in 10 years for retirement. Your short-term goals could include saving $1,000 a year or $83.33 a month.
Effective Short-Term Goals
In order to be effective, a short-term goal should be specific, realistic, finite and measurable. You should know specifically what you want to accomplish. It should be something it is possible for you to accomplish. You should set a date by which you plan to accomplish it. And you should have a set of measurable criteria that let you know when you have met the goal.
Prioritizing Goals
Prioritizing short-term goals is important. Make a list of your short-term goals in the order of importance. Notice whether any goals are related. Do some goals help you achieve other goals, or might some goals hinder you from achieving other goals? For example, if you have a short-term goal to carry your lunch instead of eating out, that could help you achieve your short-term goal to save money for retirement. But a short-term goal to take a nice vacation could get in the way of your retirement savings goal. You also should prioritize steps within each goal. Decide what you need to do to achieve each goal, and the order in which you need to do it.
Tracking Progress
Keeping track of your progress toward your short-term goals is important. Check your progress regularly, and measure your goals against the criteria you have set. You might need to modify your goals as you go along.
Rewards and Celebration
Celebrate even small successes. It takes several steps to reach a goal, and you should reward yourself with each step that brings you closer to your goal.
