Cushing, Minnesota is a rural area in Morrison County. The Mississippi River flows nearby and the lakes of Minnesota begin just to the north. Around Cushing there are historical sites such as Charles Lindberghs home as well as several rivers and parks. Its just a short ride from Cushing to hiking, biking, water sports, hunting and fishing. Things don't slow down much in winter, with cross country skiing being popular and a lot of trails are open in winter for skiing.

Resort camps

Nearby Cushing is Fishtrap Lake, one of many small lakes in the area. This lake has two resorts and one private campground. The resorts offer cabin camping and have some seasonal RV sites. This is a camp for families or groups and there is no need for a tent. Canoes are often included with the rental. Many activities are planned, such as crafts for kids or fishing tournaments and pontoon cruises for adults.

Misconceptions

It may be cold in Minnesota in winter, but that doesn't mean you have to stay inside. Many of Minnesota's trails -- and two in Morrison county -- are open to skiers and snowmobiling as long as there is at least three inches of snow on the ground. Some campgrounds are open. The Charles A Lindberg State Park has campsites open in winter, and you have to ski to get to the more distant ones.

State Parks

The Charles A. Lindberg State Park preserves the home of the father of the famous aviator. The campground has 38 sites that are wooded and private. The sites are large and surrounded by trees so you may not even see your neighbors. The park has hiking trails open winter and summer. The Mississippi River flows through the park, as do a couple of creeks, making for good fishing or canoeing.

On the trail

People in Minnesota love their trails. There are a lot of them and more continue to be developed for hiking and for skiing in winter. Auger's Pine View Resort is a camping area on Lake Shamineau. The park is a launching point for the Paul Bunyan Trail, the longest in the state. It goes on for 110 miles and connects to other trails. There are other campsites and campgrounds along the way.

Water trails

Minnesota has many water trails, which are marked trails through bodies of water one may negotiate with a canoe. Some of these trails have primitive camping along the way, and some lakes are connected.

Function

Typical campgrounds have full or partial hookups for RVs. They usually have some tent camping areas, and often the tent areas have access to water and electricity. The parks have restrooms, showers and often have laundry facilities.
