The term "hypnosis" is derived from "hypnos," the Greek word for sleep. When under hypnosis, a subject feels a sense of deep relaxation and in this altered state of consciousness is very susceptible to suggestions and propositions given as an attempt to modify negative behavior or habits. Hypnosis is recognized as a sound medical procedure by the American Psychological Association and the American Medical Association. (See Reference 3)

Types

When deciding on a hypnosis for weight loss solution, you can chose to visit a hypnotist or hypnotize yourself by using self-hypnosis. A hypnotist will ask you questions about your weight loss endeavors, and guide you into a relaxed state. When your sub-conscious mind is at its most receptive, he will make suggestions that are devised to change your future behavioral patterns around your eating habits. A hypnotist can also advise you how to continue the treatment at home by using a method of self-hypnosis.

If you decide to use self-hypnosis, you will need to either read, listen to or record a script that you will follow with the goal of relaxing your body and mind. Once relaxed, you can repeat affirmations or make other positive suggestions to yourself. (See Reference 3)

Time Frame

If you choose to visit a professional hypnotist, between four and 10 visits are usually required before you can expect to see results. This will depend largely on the problem you wish to solve, and the individual. At home self-hypnosis recordings and guides usually recommend a daily session for at least 3 weeks. Children respond more quickly and generally need fewer sessions. (See References 2 and 3)

Expert Insight

Steve G. Jones, clinical hypnotherapist and leader of the American Alliance of Hypnotists, claims that anyone can be hypnotized. Dr. Jones says the lightest "alpha" state of hypnosis is easily attained; it is a state everybody enters many times per day. It is quite similar to when we daydream or "get lost" while reading a good book or watching an interesting movie. When in the alpha state, we are far more likely to respond to suggestions and focus more on the suggestions being given to us, tuning out irrelevant thoughts.

Potential

There have been several clinical studies undertaken to determine whether hypnosis is effecting in helping people lose weight. One study involved a group of 60 overweight females receiving hypnosis as a weight loss tool. The group lost an average of 17 lbs each; while a control group lost only 0.5 lbs. In a separate study, 109 subjects underwent behavioral treatment to address weight problems, some with the addition of hypnosis. After nine weeks, the study shows both groups were successful in reducing their weight, but follow-ups at eight months and two years revealed the hypnosis recipients continued to lose weight, while those who received behavioral treatment only registered little change. (See References 1 and 4)

Conclusion

There is evidence that hypnosis can help a person lose weight, especially when used as a tool to modify destructive behavioral patterns. Although there are no guarantees that weight loss hypnosis will work for everyone, it is a safe alternative treatment that when combined with a healthy diet and exercise has the potential to produce positive results.
