Colloidal silver is a suspension of microscopic silver particles in distilled water, used to treat a number of conditions. Colloidal silver was used historically to fight infections and as a preservative. Today, some alternative health practitioners use or recommend colloidal silver due to its antibiotic, anti-fungal and anti-viral properties. As with any alternative method of treatment, you should consult a physician before using colloidal silver, and see a doctor immediately if the condition you are trying to treat does not improve or gets worse. The long-term use of colloidal silver can cause a condition known as argyria, which can cause a blue-gray discoloration of the skin.
Antiseptic
Colloidal silver's antiseptic properties may provide a number of benefits. For example, some people use colloidal silver mixed with water successfully as a mouthwash, according to Dr. Ray Sahelian. Some veterinary practitioners also use colloidal silver to treat ear infections in dogs and cats. Colloidal silver can also be used to sterilize wounds after washing them well with soap and water and prior to bandaging.
Antibacterial
Studies of colloidal silver indicate that it can benefit patients who suffer from bacterial infections. For example, a study in the medical journal Lancet found that a colloidal silver solution can destroy the bacteria responsible for diseases such as typhoid and gonorrhea. A similar solution to colloidal silver, silver nitrate, is often used in hospitals to protect the eyes of infants born to mothers who suffer from gonorrhea.
Anti-viral
Colloidal silver has also been used successfully by some practitioners to treat viruses, including those that cause the common cold and gastrointestinal upsets. In addition, a 2005 study indicated that colloidal silver might help prevent HIV-positive mothers from passing the virus to their children. The colloidal silver preparation used in that study showed that the colloidal silver can help prevent the virus from adhering to the cells of a developing zygote.
