The insertion of a lip ring or labret piercing is a bit different from that of an ear piercing. Instead of a piercing gun, the professional piercer uses a hollow needle. Initial lip piercings involve the insertion of a labret stud that has a ball on the outer end. This outer ball screws on and off, and helps to keep the lip ring in place. Removal requires unscrewing the ball prior to lifting the jewelry out of the skin of your lip.
Step 1
Wash your hands with antibacterial soap and warm water before touching your piercing. Grip the inner portion of your lip ring with the thumb and pointer finger of one hand.
Step 2
Wash your hands with antibacterial soap and warm water before touching your piercing. Grip the inner portion of your lip ring with the thumb and pointer finger of one hand.
Step 3
Continue turning the ball until it separates from the lip ring. Pull out and up on the inner part of the lip ring, gently, to remove.
Tips and Warnings
- If you have trouble with the unscrewing and removal of your lip ring, ask your piercer for assistance. He will have the tools necessary to loosen the screw and remove the lip ring.
- Do not tug or pull vigorously on the lip ring. Doing so can cause your skin to tear, possibly leaving an unsightly scar. Do not attempt to unscrew your lip ring without washing your hands first. Dirty hands can transfer bacteria to your piercing, resulting in infection. Do not remove your lip piercing before it has had time to heal, which can take anywhere between three and four months.
