Preventing the spread of germs is essential to maintaining the health of babies and young children. One way to ensure children aren't at risk of spreading germs is to give them clean toys to play with. Disinfecting plastic toys with bleach is one simple method of keeping them germ-free.

Step 1

Mix 1/4 cup bleach with 1 gallon water. Set aside.

Step 2

Wash toys thoroughly in hot soapy water.

Step 3

Rinse the toys well.

Step 4

Soak toys in bleach solution for 10 to 20 minutes.

Step 5

Rinse well with cool water, and air dry on a clean towel.

Tips and Warnings

  • If a larger yield of the diluted bleach solution is required, larger quantities can be made using the above bleach to water ratio.
  • This disinfection process is for hard plastic toy items only. Bleach is corrosive and can damage skin, fabrics and other surfaces. Do not mix bleach with any other cleaning product to avoid releasing toxic fumes into the air. Always use bleach in a well-ventilated area.
