Destin is part of Florida's Emerald Coast, which includes Fort Walton Beach and Okaloosa Island. World renowned for its 24 miles of white sand beaches and crystal clear water, Destin receives an average of 343 days of sun per year, making it a year-round destination for active travelers looking to take advantage of the outdoor recreational opportunities that the region offers.
Fishing
Known as "the world's luckiest fishing village," Destin has a wide variety of angling opportunities. Make your way to the harbor to charter a deep sea fishing adventure in which you will have the opportunity to catch bluefish, mackerel, marlin, wahoo, sailfish, cobia and 14 more edible species of fish. Stay on the pier in the evenings when it is lit for night fishing. From the pier, the jetties and the shores it is possible to hook white snapper, redfish, speckled trout and tarpons that can weigh up to 100 pounds.
Snorkeling and SCUBA
Destin is considered one of the best snorkel and SCUBA destinations north of the Florida Keys. Several tour companies at the jetties near Destin Pass offer guided snorkeling and SCUBA adventures, like underwater wreckage sites. Destin is a prime location for spotting dolphins, loggerhead turtles, stingrays and a diverse array of tropical fish.
Beaches
Destin is the sight of 24 miles of white sand beaches with a plethora of activities available. However, as of mid-June 2010, oil and tar balls washed up on the beaches of Destin and Fort Walton. The beaches remain open but you are cautioned to go into the water due to the health risks of the oil contamination. The beaches are also open to jogging for those of you wanting to keep up your cardio while on vacation.
Water Recreation
From companies located at the beaches and in the harbor, a wide variety of water recreation sport rentals and tours are available. To explore the coastal waters, rent a canoe, kayak or even a jet ski if you prefer the adrenaline rush. Parasailing is offered from companies such as High Fly Parasail and Gilligan's Water Sports. Go tubing, wakeboarding or waterskiing by renting the equipment or signing up for tours at the Destin Harbor.
Festivals and Events
After a long sun-soaked day on the beaches and waters of Destin, go back into town to take advantage of the various events and festivals that Destin offers. Take part in one of Destin's athletic events such as the Stand Up and Paddle Jam. Race for prizes or simply learn how to stand up and paddle in this event which begins in late March and runs through early September.
