Hair can become damaged in a number of ways. The Herb Companion states that hair that is longer than a foot, or about shoulder length, is more than two years old at the bottom. Therefore time, stress, chemical or environmental factors can all play a part in hair damage. Herbal remedies have long been used throughout time as part of a natural beauty regimen. Women in many cultures have shared their understanding of plants and have passed on the knowledge of which herbs can benefit in helping create lustrous locks. Create an herbal infusion to apply to hair that will restore the health of your hair. Please note it may be important to check with your health care provider before taking herbal medicine, as some side effects could occur.
Step 1
Add the loose herbs of burdock, marshmallow, parsley, and nettle into a large glass jar.
Step 2
Pour the olive oil directly over the herbs, in a 2:1 ratio, so that there is twice as much oil as herbal material.
Step 3
Seal the glass jar and shake for several minutes.
Step 4
Store the jar in sunlight inside the house, such as a windowsill. Shake and rotate the jar once a day for two weeks.
Step 5
Strain the plant material from the oil by using cheesecloth. Clean the jar and pour the oil back into it.
Step 6
Stir 2 tbsp of honey and mix it thoroughly into the oil.
Step 7
Drop 5 or so drops of the rosemary and peppermint essential oils into the mixture. Close the lid tightly and roll the jar back and forth on a flat surface for several minutes.
Step 8
Add the oil to the roots of your hair, or to the ends if your hair tends to be oily. Refrigerate the oil when not using.
Tips and Warnings
- This herbal infusion is meant to nourish and restore vitality to dry and limp hair. The essential oils are there to stimulate hair growth. Try rubbing it into your scalp and ends right before a shower by placing a shower cap on. The steam from the shower will help open hair follicles and deeply infuse the oil into hair strands. Also try adding the oil into your hair at night before you sleep. Place a towel over your pillow so that you don't damage your pillowcase. You can find these herbs and essential oils in a natural health food store. The herbs can also make a lovely tea that can help nourish the hair as well. Be sure to strain all plant material out of the oil, as leaving any may cause bacteria to grow.
- You may want to test the oil infusion on your skin to make sure that no allergic reactions occur. Nursing or pregnant women should always exercise caution before trying alternative treatments.
