The skin on your elbows takes a good beating on a regular. It moves and stretches each time you move your arms. It gets rough and dry as you lean on your elbows. All this wear and tear, mixed with sun damage, different clothing fibers, hormonal changes and diet can all contribute to rough, dark skin patches. To restore your healthy skin you need to slough away old cells while you protect and nourish new ones.
Step 1
Gently rub away dry skin at the surface of your elbow with a loofah.Loofahs can be harsh, so rub the area in a soft circular motion.
Step 2
Wash your elbow with a moisturizing body wash and rinse. Pat dry when you're done with the rest of your shower.
Step 3
Apply a rich moisturizer to your elbow as soon as you're done bathing, according to MayoClinic.com. Use a thick moisturizer with plenty of oils to hydrate existing skin and promote softness in the new skin below. Rub in until the moisturizer has been absorbed into the skin.
Step 4
Rub a thin layer of moisturizer on top of the dry skin, but don't rub it all the way in. Allow it to sit on the skin as a protective barrier. This helps block additional moisture from leaving the skin according to the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology's manual "Caring for Dry Skin."
Step 5
Reapply moisturizer to your elbows several times per day. Repeat exfoliating and moisturizing every day until your elbows lose their dark skin. Moisturize daily to prevent a relapse of dark, dry skin.
