An infant that cannot breathe from a stuffy nose may become irritable and fussy. When an infant has nasal congestion, it can cause problems with nursing and in some cases, more serious breathing problems. As the child gets older, it is usually just uncomfortable, but a stuffy nose can cause problems with the ears, hearing and speech development. In children with serious nasal congestion, sleep problems may occur. These techniques are not a substitute for medical treatment; consult with your health care provider to discuss any potential risks.

Drops

Saltwater or saline nose drops are one way that you can help to relieve a stuffed up nose. Saltwater nose drops is available over-the-counter at stores or you can make your own at home. To make your own saltwater nose drops, stir 1/4 tsp of salt into 1/2 cup of lukewarm water. Administer one to three drops in each nostril. After 30 to 60 seconds have elapsed, turn the baby onto his stomach to allow the mucus to drain. Discard any unused portion of the saltwater drops that you make, it should be made fresh daily as needed.

Nasal Bulb

An infant nasal bulb aspirator is helpful in removing mucus that is causing congestion. In order to use a nasal aspirator, you squeeze the air out of the bulb and place bulb tip into the nostril. Release the grasp on the bulb and allow the air to come back into the bulb, which in turn pulls the mucus out of her nose.

Change the Sleeping Position

Elevating the bed by placing pillows underneath the mattress or books under two of the bed legs to incline the head of the bed at a 45-degree angle will help to clear out nasal congestion. Inclining the head of your baby will allow the mucus to exit the nose. In addition, allowing the child to sleep in her car seat may provide the right angle of elevation.

Add Humidity

Increasing the humidity in the baby's room with a cool mist humidifier can help to relieve any congestion or stuffiness that he might be suffering from. When using a humidifier, it is important to monitor the room to ensure it hasn't become too moist as it can inhibit the growth of mold. In addition, the humidifier requires a daily cleaning and the water should be changed as well.
